Moot Courts are not new to The Hague; they are already compulsory for law students at the university. What makes this Moot Court unique, however, is that it is intended for high school students. It will give young people who are (or may be) interested in studying law and who enjoy debating the opportunity, as part of a team, to show what they can do.
The students learn how international (criminal) law works. They learn how to think, argue and present a case logically. Skills that will stand them in good stead in the future. The working language in the Moot Court is English.
The International Moot Court (IMC) is a two-yearly international competition for high school students at Higher Secondary (HAVO), Pre-University (VWO) or International Baccalaureate (IB) level between the ages of 14 and 18. Teams of students will compete with each other in an international court. It is a unique event that enables selected students to gain international experience in their own country and at the same time learn a great deal about arguing and pleading a case in court. The IMC is organised by The Hague City Council in collaboration with the City of New York.
In 2017, the selection round for the IMC, the National Moot Court, will be organised for the first time in The Hague for students in classes 3 and 4 HAVO and classes 3, 4 and 5 VWO.
On that day, the students will take part in a workshop about international criminal law and will learn how to plead in front of judges. After the workshop, based on a case assigned to them all the participants will be able to display their skills and show how clearly they can express their ideas in English. At the end of the day, a jury will determine which students will be selected for the All-star team. This team will represent the Netherlands at the International Moot Court in 2018.
